What to Do for Summer Roof Maintenance
June 10, 2020Metal Roofing vs. Tile Roofing: How Do They Compare?
August 10, 2020With Summer weather in full effect, this can leave roofs open to damage from higher temperatures. While generally older roofs are more susceptible to damage from heat, it’s still a good idea to know how warmer weather can affect a roof.
To give you an idea, here are some of the most common ways that roofs can sustain damage during the summertime.
1 – Roof Degradation
With increased exposure to sunlight and heat, this can cause asphalt shingles to curl and erode. When this happens, this makes underlying roofing material exposed to rain and rays from the sun. Essentially, this makes it easier for your roof to get water damage if it rains. This exposure also makes your roof more vulnerable to damage directly from the sun. As mentioned, this is usually a bigger problem for older roofs, but it’s a good idea to check for these signs even if your roof is newer.
2- Roof Deck Rotting
Your roof deck is the wood base of your roof. When it rains in the summer, this often leads to high humidity. In turn, this settled moisture and humidity can cause the wood from the roof deck to begin to rot. If and when this happens, this opens your roof up to a world of other possible damage.
A good way to think about your roof deck is that it acts as the foundation of your whole roof. If it becomes compromised from water or heat damage, this can make your entire roof weaker and less secure overall.
3 – Cracking and Warping Shingles
This is often on of the first noticeable signs of a damaged roof. In South Texas, it gets very hot during the summer. But while 100 degrees sounds hot, your roof can actually get to a much higher temperature than this.
Shingles are an important part of your roof and are meant to protect, but they can only take so much heat for so long. When shingles crack, curl or warp, it’s almost certain your roof will need some sort of repair. But the longer damaged shingles are left alone, the more damage your roof will likely take over time.
